Pay Grade: Teacher Scale


Period of Employment: 11 Months FLSA Status: Exempt 


Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Principal


General Responsibilities: Provides a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students and provides services to promote the social and emotional development as well as the academic development of each student at Colonial Beach Public Schools.

 

Essential Duties:

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information, while maintaining the safety and welfare for all students and staff members
  • Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children’s educational welfare
  • Reports any pertinent information to the proper authorities in cases of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse
  • Collects and interprets data about students to assist in program planning, occupational and/or educational placement to include the development of a career development plan
  • Provides individual counseling to students who refer themselves or are referred by parents, teachers, or administrators
  • Provides small group counseling as needed for all grade levels on developmental or problem-centered issues
  • Counsels with students individually and in groups to assist in problem solving and decision-making of a personal, social, emotional, academic, educational, or vocational nature
  • Provides student orientation of the offerings of the school, its personnel, facilities, regulations, and courses
  • Consults with school staff and parents and refers students for specialized services
  • Understands that students differ in their learning styles and differentiates instruction to meet diverse student needs
  • Administers various tests for counseling and guidance purposes
  • Supervises preparation of transcripts upon request of a receiving school, as requested by building administrators
  • Consults regularly with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding needs of students
  • Assists with providing mediation for student conflicts
  • Maintains a positive discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff
  • Ensures the adequate supervision of students
  • Motivates students to achieve maximum potential
  • Creates supportive learning environment for all students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students
  • Responsible for the scheduling of student classes
  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and assist in appropriate interventions
  • Assist with the coordination of standardized testing
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

 

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 


  • In order to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program, the professional school counselor should understand and be competent in the following areas:  human growth and development, core components for helping relationships, cultural diversity, societal change and trends, student learning and academic success, evaluation of student needs, group and individual counseling techniques, career development, use of data, use of technology, leadership, advocacy, systemic change, legal/ethical guidelines, collaboration with internal/external stakeholders, research/program evaluation, and interaction with educational professionals.
  • Ability to communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing, including preparing complex reports, making formal oral presentations, and participating fluently in meetings. 
  • Serve as a role model and recognize that they are in a position of public trust and are held to a high standard of personal and professional conduct.

Physical Requirements: 

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required.
