Special Education Instructional Assistant (Special Setting)

 

Pay Grade: Instructional Assistant


Period of Employment: 10 Months FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 


Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Principal


General Responsibilities: To provide support for the academic, behavioral, and personal needs of students with disabilities in a special setting classroom in collaboration with the special education team and administrators at Colonial Beach Public Schools. 

The position is entirely funded through state grant funds and is contingent upon the continued allocation of such funding. Employment beyond the current grant cycle is not guaranteed.

 

Essential Duties:

Essential Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direct instructional and behavioral support to students with disabilities in a special setting classroom in collaboration with the special education teacher(s) and administrators
  • Assist students with daily living skills, including toileting, feeding, dressing, and mobility, as needed
  • Implement individualized education program (IEP) goals and accommodations as directed by the teacher or related service providers
  • Support students with emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges using positive behavior intervention strategies for all assigned students to the students’ best ability
  • Helps promote students’ independence, social skills, and self-help skills
  • Monitor and document student progress and behavior data for review by the instructional team
  • Monitors students and controls the behavior of students in classroom and non-classroom situations
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that supports the physical and emotional well-being of all students
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of classroom materials, activities, and adaptive equipment
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to support student success
  • Assists with monitoring students on playgrounds, getting on and off buses, and to and from the classroom
  • Participate in ongoing training related to special education, crisis intervention, and behavior management techniques
  • Understands and follows through with oral and written instructions directed by teachers and administrators
  • Operates standard office equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor



Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to build relationships with students, families, faculty, and administrators from diverse life experiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of school administration
  • Thorough knowledge of  special education, crisis intervention, and behavior management techniques
  • Ability to develop and present ideas and information effectively, orally and in written form
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with principals, school staff and administrators, and families of CBPS
  • Willingness to be flexible and work in many assignments throughout the School

 

Education or Equivalency Requirements:

Physical Requirements: 

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required.
